What is Domain Reputation?

Domain reputation is a score that indicates how trustworthy a domain is based on various factors including its history, email sending behavior, and association with malicious activities. A good domain reputation is crucial for email deliverability and online trust.

How Domain Reputation Scoring Works

Overall Score

  • Good (0 or higher): Domain has positive reputation
  • Suspicious (-1 to -5): Domain shows some risk indicators
  • Bad (below -5): Domain has significant reputation issues

Dimension Scores

  • Human: Scoring based on manual investigations by research teams. Used when automation isn't possible, such as understanding adversaries' tactics, tools, and procedures (TTPs).
  • Identity: Automated scoring based on domain identity factors including email authentication and encryption configurations.
  • Infrastructure: Automated scoring based on infrastructure factors including name servers and domain hosting. Poor IP reputation (DROP datasets) can adversely affect this score.
  • Malware: Automated scoring based on malware associations from various intelligence feeds. Includes domains distributing malware or associated with botnet infrastructure.
  • SMTP: Automated scoring based on global email metadata patterns from email service providers and security partners.
